Mehaffey stars as Ireland beat Scotland 6-3
Brilliant golf by Great Britain and Ireland international Olivia Mehaffey spearheaded Ireland to a 6-3 win over Scotland on the opening day of the Girls Home International matches at Lanark Golf Club in Scotland.
The Irish led the Scots 2-1 from tMhe morning foursomes' and there was still a chance that the host nation might turn it around in the singles. But Olivia produced a five-star performance to beat Junior Vagliano Trophy team player Shannon McWilliam 5 and 4 in the top singles.
That was quickly followed by more Irish singles victories, from Julie McCarthy, Elisa Corcoran and Lisa O'Shea.
Mehaffey produced a five-birdie performance against McWilliam who had two birdies of her own in a quality match.rre
There was only one hole in it, in favour of the Irish player after nine holes. Then Mehaffey moved into over-drive by winning the 10th, 11th and also '12th and 13th, both with birdies. A half at the 14th ended the contest with Olivia an approximate three under par
McCarthy was another Irish player who turned in a classy performance. She was never behind, had three birdies and finished roughly one under par in beating Jillian Farrell by 4 and 3.
Only one up after five, McCarthy sugred into a four-hole lead at the turn by win@#'ning the sixth, eighth and ninth.
Lisa O'Shea beat Molly Richmond by 5 and 4 with two-over-par figures that included three birdies. The Irish player was four up after eight holes and won the 10th, 13th and 14th (with a birdie) for the match.
Elisa Corcoran claimed the scalp of Scotland's second Junior Vagliano Trophy player, Hazel MacGarvie, by a 5 and 3 margin.
There were no birdies in this match with Corcoran finished roughly one or two over par. After the first four holes were halved, the Irish player seized the initiative by winning the fifth, seventh, 11th and 12th holes.
There was some consolation for the Scots in wins by Joanne Free and Chloe Goadby against two Junior Vagliano Trophy team players in the Irish line-up, Annabel Wilson and Mairead Martin.
Free beat Wilson by one hole after winning the 13th and 14th holes to go two up.
Wilson hit back with a winning bidie at the 15th but Free held on grimly to her narrow lead over the closing holes to finish one up. The Scot was level par.
Goadby was two over par in winning by 2 and 1 against Martin. The Scot led for the first time at the eight but quickly added successes at the 10th and 11th to be three up.
Martin came with a late charge, winning the 15th and 16th but Goadby won the 17th for the match.
