England start Stroyan Cup defence with 8-1 win over Wales
England opened their title defence and their bid for an eighth successive Stroyan Cup triumph by beating Wales 8-1 but it was not quite so easy a victory as that lopside scoreline suggests.
With only a handful of holes to play in the morning foursomes, all three ties were all square.
England edged into a 2-1 lunchtime lead and never looked back, taking the singles by a 6-0 margin that had not seemed on the cards when the fighting Welsh were on the verge of carrying over a morning lead into the afternoon action.
Emily Toy had set the ball rolling England's way in the afternoon rout by beating Angharad Evans 5 and 4 with one-over par figures that included two birdies and very few mistakes.
All square after six, Toy won the seventh, eighth, ninth (with a birdie) and the 10th to be four up and in command of the outcome.
Hollie Muse followed with a 4 and 2 win over Olivia Kelly.
Hollie had three birdies and two double bogey 6s which meant she was two over par for the victory
Muse was two up after four holes, three ahead after nine and four up on the 11th tee.
GB and I international Alice Hewson won the lead=off singles tie by two holes over Lucy Jones.
Alice had five birdies but was level par for the match. She was three down after 10 but moved up a gear with winning birdies at the 11th and 12th and a winning par at the 13th to square the contest.
Another birdie put Alice ahead at the 15th and she was conceded a clinching birdie on the last green for a two-hole win.
Emma Allen was a 2 and 1 winner over Jordan Ryan
Birdies at the 12th and 13th were the key to the win by Allen who improved from one down to one up in the space of three holes. She went two up by winning the 15th.
Eloise Healey won by 2 and 1 against Bethan Morris who had been three.up after only four holes.
Healey took it all in her stride and squared the match at the seventh and led for the first time at the eighth.
Level again after 12 holes, the English player won the 12th, 16th (with a birdie) and the 17th for victory.
Elizabeth Prior completed England's afternoon of unremitting success by beating Ella Griffiths by one hole in the final match to finish.
The Welsh player was three up after 15 but Prior came from behind to win with gains at the 14th, 15th, 16th and 17th, the latter two holes with birdies just when she needed them.
