Alice Hewson finishes sixth at Yale Intercollegiate
Clemson University women's team finished second at the Yale Intercollegiate
Stephenson Co-medalist at Yale Intercollegiate
Clemson, South Carolina—Lauren Stephenson captured co-medalist
honors to lead Clemson to a second-place team finish at the Yale Women’s
Intercollegiate at the Course at Yale in New Haven, Conn. on Sunday.
It tied for Clemson’s best team finish in the three year history of the
program, and was third straight top five finish for J.T. Horton’s team
in 2015.
Furman and Clemson battled for the team title the entire weekend. The Paladins had an eight-shot lead entering the final round, but Clemson played the first 13 holes in even par, while Furman was nine over, giving Clemson a one-shot lead with five to play. But the Paladins played the final five holes at three-under par and won by five shots. Clemson had a final round score of three-over-par 287 on the par 71 Yale Course. Only Michigan had a better team score on Sunday with a 286.
With Stephenson taking co-medalist honors it meant a Clemson freshman has at least tied for first in each of the first three tournaments this year. Alice Hewson was co-medalist at the Cougar Classic, then won the Lady Paladin Invitational.
Stephenson shot a 74 on Sunday after opening with scores of 68-69. Her 211 total was the best of her young career. She was co-medalist with Emily White of the Michigan, who shot a one-under-par 70 on Sunday.
While Stephenson was co-medalist for the tournament, three other Tigers shot even par for the final round, all of whom finished in the top 10. Hewson, Sloan Shanahan and Lauren Salazar all had even-par rounds on Sunday to help Clemson to the second-place team finish. Hewson’s round included an eagle on the par five fourth hole. Shanahan and Salazar both had clean rounds with one birdie, one bogey and 16 pars.
This marked the first time since the Feb. 14-16, 2014 Florida Matchup, and just the second time in the history of the program that three Clemson golfers finished in the top 10 in the same tournament. That event Ashlan Ramsey was third, McKenzie Talbert was sixth and Salazar was seventh in the final standings.
Freshman Alice Hewson from Berkhamsted finished sixth with a 218 total for the 54 holes, while Shanahan was close behind in eighth place with a 219 score. Salazar finished tied for 21st with a 225 score. Jessica Hoang had a 76 on Sunday and finished 56th with a 235 score.
Marisa Messana played the event as an individual and finished in 36th place with a 230 score.
Clemson concludes the fall portion of its schedule at the Landfall Tradition at Wilmington, N.C. in two weeks.
