CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – With 18 holes remaining at the Tar Heel Invitational women's college tournament , both Duke University sophomore Leona Maguire and the Duke women’s golf team hold leads at the 6,379-yard, Par 72 Finley Golf Course at North Carolina State University
Dealing with rainy conditions for most of the round, the Blue Devils totalled a five-over-par, 293, Saturday and holds an 11-stroke lead with a 36-hole total of 578. Arkansas is the next closest team with a 589, while Louisville (589), NC State (592), Michigan State (592), Alabama (593), Tennessee Duke University (The Blue Devils) will be going for their third consecutive Tar Heel Invitational title and the 14th in school history.
Maguire, pictured, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, moved into the individual lead Saturday, after carding an even-par, 72, in round two. She has a three-under 141 36-hole total to lead by one stroke over Molly Skapik of Louisville, 142.
Leona opened her second round with a birdie on the 366-yard, par four first hole and then had a bogey on No. 4, before closing with 14 straight pars.
Head coach Dan Brooks will be going for his 123rd career victory in the final round, which would extend his NCAA Division I record for wins.
Duke will tee off Sunday in a shotgun start beginning at 9:15 a.m., along with Louisville and Arkansas.
Former Scottish Under-21 champion India Clyburn from Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire, is sharing fourth place on 145 with rounds of 73 and 72
Alison Knowles (Michigan State) is sharing 26th place on 149 with rounds of 74 and 75.
Elizabeth Mallett (North Carolina) from Sutton Coldfield is T66 on 156 after scores of 74 and 82
Scot Lauren Whyte from St Andrews, a student at Baylor University, Texas, is T74 in a field of 96. She has had a pair of 79s.
