WINNERS
OF 2015 GIBSON CUP ARE
BOTH COMISTON LADIES!
BOTH COMISTON LADIES!
Sue
Cowie (current captain of Comiston
Ladies GC) and Pam Townsend (past captain of Comiston Ladies, and also of Murrayfield GC) combined to win the Gibson Cup at the weekend at their first attempt.
This annual ladies’ foursomes
competition is played over the Braid Hills course, combining foursomes
stroke-play, match-play and Stableford
with three trophies at stake but the main event is for the historic Gibson Cup.
See below the picture of this year’s winners followed by a report on the
weekend’s golf from Anne Brownie, Chair of the Gibson Cup Committee.
The
2015 Gibson Cup competition was played in beautiful autumnal conditions: lots
of sunshine, a few clouds, no rain and, unusually for the Braids, no wind.
As
a result, many of the scores in Saturday morning’s qualifying stroke-play
competition were very good while others found that the gorse bushes provided a
strong attraction for their golf balls and pars or even bogeys were hard to
get.
Against a course par of 72, the cut
off for qualifying for the Gibson Cup flight of match-play was 73.5 while a net
score of 75 or better was required for
the second flight of match-play, playing for the Herald and Post (H and P) Claret Jug. The qualifying scores for both
flights are listed at the end of this report together with the Stableford scores and prizewinners from
Sunday’s Consolation Salver.
In
the first of Sunday’s semi-finals in the top flight, top qualifiers Sue Cowie
and Pam Townsend were in good form to record a 5 and 3 win over Marie Young and Jenni Ray (both North Berwick). Anne Brownie (Gullane and Mortonhall) and Mary
Stark (Mortonhall) found it harder going in the other Gibson Cup semi-final
with the lead swapping back and forward in a very close match against Fiona
Ford and Louise Campbell (both Murrayfield). This match was eventually settled
at the first extra hole with Anne and Mary progressing to the afternoon Final.
The
Gibson Cup Final again saw changes of fortune with Anne and Mary taking an
early lead, only to find themselves clawed back; they were one down at the turn,
and having to give strokes on four of the holes on the back nine (seven shots in
total) looked up against it.
Pam and Sue
were playing very steady golf and doing well on the tricky greens to extend
their lead to three holes after 14. A late fightback from Anne and
Mary reduced their deficit to one hole after 16 but Pam and Sue won
the Final at the 17th by a 2 and 1 margin.
The
second flight of match-play saw Denise Mitchell (Murrayfield) and Gilly Glen
(Craigmillar Park) take on the 2014
Gibson Cup winners, Aileen Kennedy and Fiona Smith (both Harburn). Aileen and
Fiona made good use of their years of experience playing in the Gibson Cup
weekend to prevail by the margin of 3
and 1. Nineteen
holes were again needed to determine the winners in the second semi-final, with
Linda Jack driving the green at the first extra hole (into the breeze!),
enabling Linda and partner Fiona McGregor (both Dumfries and Galloway) to edge
out Sarah Stichbury (Gullane) and Margo Gardner (Linlithgow).
A
few encounters with the Braids’ famous gorse bushes as well as a bunker or two
proved costly for Fiona and Aileen in the afternoon second flight final as
Linda and Fiona (McGregor), who were giving three shots, eased to being four up at the turn.
The long
par five 10th and 11th holes were halved but then Linda
and Fiona closed out the match by
winning both the 12th and 13th to finish 6 and 5 winners and become the 2015
holders of the H and P Claret Jug
The
Consolation Salver was won comfortably with a great Stableford score of 41pts by Bev Winton (Mortonhall) and Sarah McCall (Gullane). Bev is pictured with the Salver as Sarah had
to make her apologies for missing the Prizegiving. (See other scores in “Detailed
Results” section at the end of this report.)
Thanks
to Ian Young of Braid Hills Driving Range who sponsored this year’s Consolation
Trophy and to Zest Skin Spa who provided Consolation prizes. Thanks also to
American Golf (Braid Hills) for all their assistance with the wonderful prizes
for the match-play qualifiers.
A very big
thank you goes to all competitors who helped with a fantastic fund-raising
effort for Breast Cancer Now with almost £500 raised over the weekend.
After
twelve years of organising the Gibson Cup this is the last report from Anne
Brownie as Chairperson. Anne would like to take this opportunity to
thank everyone who, since 2004, has helped make the Gibson Cup the successful
event it is, and especially to those who contributed to her “retirement” gifts
and made the 2015 Gibson Cup go so well.
