ATLANTA, Georgia – The inaugural East Lake Cup tournament teed off Monday at the East Lake Golf Club but was delayed by four hours due to inclement weather conditions. After the delay, Duke took control early and has an impressive lead over top-seeded Stanford.
Play was suspended due to darkness at 5:30 p.m. local time Monday as only two of the 10 matches were finished in the afternoon. The semi-final matches will resume at 7:30 a.m. local time Tuesday, airing live on Golf Channel.
The Blue Devils, who are seeded No. 4 overall, holds a commanding lead in three of their four matches still to be completed over 2015 national champions Stanford, with a point already on the board, courtesy of sophomore Gurbani Singh’s 3 and 2 win over Stanford’s Shannon Aubert.
In the other Duke matches, Leona Maguire is 2 up on Lauren Kim through 14 holes. Celine Boutier holds a two-hole advantage through 11 holes over Casey Danielson and Sandy Choi leads Quirine Eijkenboom with 10 holes completed. Blue Devil freshman Virginia Elena Carta had an early lead on Mariah Stackhouse, but the Stanford senior came back and is 2 up through 12 holes.
In the other semifinal match, Southern California leads Baylor in two of the five matches, while two matches are all square and Baylor leads in one match.
The rain-soaked East Last Golf Club received more than three inches of rain in the 36 hours prior to day one matches Monday, providing competitors with difficult scoring conditions throughout the day.
