Gabrielle Macdonald tied 7th in Portugal with
a 71, five behind Spanish leader by three
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
Former Scottish women's amateur champion Gabrielle Macdonald (Craigielaw), an honours graduate of St Andrews University, shot a one-under-par 71 to be a creditable tied seventh in a star-studded field for the 72-hole Portuguese women's open amateur stroke-play championship at Montado Golf Resort, near Setubal on the Costa Azul.
Gabrielle had birdies at the short eighth, 10th, and 17th, offset by boggeys at the fourth and 13th in halves of 36-35.
The Scot (pictured) trails the three-stroke leader, Maria Parra (Spain), No 3 in the Women's World Amateur Rankings, by five strokes.
England's Emily Slater and Gemma Clews, joint second on 69, are Parra's closest rivals after 18 holes.
Former Scottish U18 girls champion Fiona Liddell, who lives in Germany where her father is a club pro, is tied 20th after a 73.
Chloe Goadby (St Regulus) is joint 56th after a 76 while Hannah McCook (Grantown on Spey) and Gemma Batty (Powfoot) are joint 78th with 78s.
Jennifer Saxton (Kinross) shot a 79 to be tied 83rd in a field of 89 players.
Vagliano Trophy player Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies) would have been disappointed to finish the first day in tied 43rd place with a 75. She had three birdies but a double bogey at the 16th and four bogeys to boot.
Inci Mehmet (Royal Mid Surrey), another contender for a Curtis Cup place at Dun Laoghaire in June, could do no better than a 789 for joint 78th position alongside Grantown on Spey's Hannah McCook and Gemma Batty (Powfoot).
The field will be cut to the leading 40 and ties after three rounds.
