Maguire finish in top 10 in California

PALOS VERDES, California. – Duke University sophomore Leona Maguire placed tied eighth overall, while turning in her 10th straight top 10 placement, as the second-ranked Duke women’s golf team opened the 2016 spring campaign in the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge at the 6,017-yard, par 71 Palos Verdes Golf Club.
Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, carded rounds of 69, 76 and 70 over the three days to finish with a two-over, 215, which was six off the individual lead. Arizona State’s Monica Vaughn registered the individual title with a four-under-par, 209, which included a six-under-par, 65, in the final round.
Currently the No. 1 ranked amateur golfer in the world, Maguire opened with a bogey on the first hole and then turned in a par, before suffering a double-bogey on the 205-yard, par three fourth hole. Maguire then turned things around with birdies on No. 5, No. 7 and No. 8 to get back to even par for the day. Overall, she played her final 12 holes at three-under-par as Maguire carded a birdie on the 453-yard, par five 16th.
Freshman Virginia Elena Carta collected her third top-20 placement out of four college tournaments as she notched rounds of 73, 71 and 75 for a three-day ledger of 219, which was tied 17th. Carta, a native of Udine, Italy, was held to one birdie Tuesday, which came on the 147-yard, par three eighth hole.
Sandy Choi, a junior from Seoul, South Korea, also finished in the top 20 with rounds of 72, 74 and 75 or a 54-hole score of 221. Choi had 14 pars and four bogeys in the final round to finish with a 75. She hit seven greens, 10 fairways and had 29 putts on the day.
A product of Paris suburb, Montrouge, France, Celine Boutier played her final 14 holes Tuesday at even par, after opening with four straight bogeys. She went on to finish with a final round 75 and was tied 28th overall with rounds of 71, 77 and 75 for a 223.
Sophomore Gurbani Singh struggled over the three days of play with a three-day total of 239. She had rounds of 77, 80 and 82. Playing as an individual, sophomore Lisa Maguire tied for 73rd along with Singh at 239. She had rounds of 79, 82 and 78.
There were three GB and I Curtis Cup team contenders in the top 10 finishers - Charlotte Thomas (Washington) T2 on 212; Bronte Law (UCLS) (who birdied the last hole) T4 on 214; and Leona Maguire (Duke) T8 on 215
As a team, Duke placed tied fifth with a 26-over-par score of 878. Washington took home the team title with an 858, while Alabama (864), Florida (869), Southern California (877), Duke (878), UCLA (878), Arizona State (891), Oklahoma State (901), North Carolina (901) and Arizona (903) rounded out the top 10.
“We weren't at our best, clearly, but the passion was there,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks. “Leona's round of one under today was impressive. She only had two pars on the front, and got it up and down a lot. Celine fought the same way. Her driver wasn't working so she adjusted to a three wood, and had it close to par just to the end.”
The top three teams in the national rankings placed fourth and fifth overall in the tournament and only one shot separating – Southern California (No. 1 finished fourth), Duke (No. 2 finished tied fifth) and UCLA (No. 3 finished tied fifth).
Duke will next compete in the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate March 4-6 in Hilton Head, S.C.
