Lexi Thompson takes four-stroke lead into
final round of Honda LPGA Thailand
FROM THE LPGA TOUR WEBSITEReport by Amy Rogers
Come Sunday, Lexi Thompson could be picking up more than one title in Thailand.
The first round leader returned to the top of the leaderboard on moving day at the Honda LPGA Thailand with a nearly flawless, third round 8-under par, 64 to take a 4-stroke lead at 16-under par. With a victory on Sunday, Thompson would become the first American to win in the event’s 10-year history and potentially overtake Stacy Lewis as the top-ranked American in the world.
Currently ranked No.4 in the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings behind No.3 Lewis, Thompson could move to No.3 with a victory and Lewis finishing in a tie for second or worse. Thompson could also overtake Lewis with a finish in solo second depending on Lewis who is T-36 at even through 54-holes.
The 21-year old had just one stumble on Saturday, leaving her chip short of the green at the difficult par 3, 16th hole.
Thompson then left short her long putt for par, resulting in her only dropped shot of the day. But she bounced back at the last, draining a long breaking putt for birdie and her second round of 64 this week.
Thompson opened with an 8-under par, 64 on Thursday to take the lead in round one before scrambling to a second round even par, 72.
“Yeah, it was a good day out there, very solid. I just made sure I had fun out there and stayed positive. I missed a putt on the first hole, which got me down a little bit, but I tried to stay positive going into the next hole and fire at pins like I did the first day,” Thompson said after her round.
Thompson has converted the 54-hole lead into victory four of the six times she has lead entering the final round. A win on Sunday would mark her seventh career win on the LPGA Tour and third in seven months.
Four-strokes back of Thompson sits U.S. Women’s Open Champion and 2016 rookie In Gee Chun, who is second at 12-under par after carding a third round, bogey-free 6-under par, 66. Chun cut into Thompson’s six-stroke lead on the back nine, dropping a 20-footer for just the third birdie of the day at the tough par 3, 16th hole.
Chun is making just her second start of the 2016 season this week in Thailand after finishing T-3 in her LPGA Tour debut at the Coates Golf Championship. To catch Thompson on Sunday Chun will be leaning on a lot of experience, having won eight times on the KLPGA including five wins last season which earned her Player of the Year honors.
“This is my second tournament on the LPGA Tour, and everybody came to support me, so I'm really happy about today,” Chun said after her round. “Every day the dream stays the same. It's been my dream as well. It's a dream come true. I'm going to enjoy it. That is my goal this whole year.”
Defending champion Amy Yang is solo third at 11-under par, ahead of Hee Young Park at 9-under par after jumping into fourth with a third round 6-under par, 66. Ha Na Jang and Xi Yu Lin are T-5 at 8-under par.
