Mehaffey v Coffey for Irish close title
This afternoon's Irish women's close amateur championship at Lahinch is an all-Ulster affair, being contested by the world No 8, Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies), and Louise Coffey (Malone), No 1,723 in the world rankings but, far more important, conqueror of top seed Sinead Sexton (Lahinch) in the morning semi-finals.
Curtis Cup team selection for next month's match at Dun Laoghaire, near Dublin, Mehaffey never looked back after winning the first two holes of her semi-final against Aoife Lowry (Tipperary) and ran out a 5 and 4 winner.
Belfast's Coffey saw off home member Sexton after a fast start. Coffey closed out with a birdie 4 on the 14th to win her match 5 and 4. The all Ulster final will tee off at 13:00.
Plate Championship
Anne McCormack (Naas) held the lead on the front 9 against friend and fellow semi-finalist Aedin Murphy (Carlow) but Murphy bounced back with birdies on 10, 11 and 13 to take the lead and closed out the match on 17 with a two-putt par.
In the other semi-final, Elisa Corcoran (Grange) and Orla Dunphy (Kilkenny) played steady golf on the front 9 to turn all square but Elisa attacked on the back 9 and won 3 and 2.
