Olivia Mehaffey wins Irish close championship
Teenager Olivia Mehaffey will play in next month's Curtis Cup match at Dun Laoghaire GC as the Irish women's close amateur champion.
Now ranked No 8 in the world, Olivia beat outsider Louise Coffey (Malone GC, Belfast) who put up a great show to take the hot title favourite from Royal Co Down Ladies to the 18th green before losing by one hole in the all-Ulster final at Lahinch Golf Club.
Coffey won the first hole but Mehaffey squared it at the second and went ahead with a two-putt birdie 4 at the long fourth.
Coffey levelled
the match on the par 3 fifth but fell one down again when she failed to get up and own after missing the seventh green.
Louise took advantage on the 10th
when Mehaffey found some deep rough and the match was all square
again.
Another two-putt birdie 4, at the long 12th, saw Olivia edge in front again. Mehaffey holed a 3ft eagle putt at the 15th to go two up with three to play.
Coffey kept her cool and got one back with a par at the 16th.
The 17th was halved and Mehaffey holed a 3ft putt on the last green to clinch her first Irish close title success.
She adds the
Irish Close Championship title to her Irish
Ladies’ Open Stroke Play and Welsh Ladies Open Stroke Play titles this
year already.
Aedin Murphy (Carlow) beat Elisa Corcoran (Grange) by 7 and 6 in the Plate Championship Final.
Murphy was on fire on the front nine and was seven up at the turn.
