Duke University open Baton Rouge Regional

 in tied 7th on Day 1

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana – The top-seeded and fourth-ranked Duke women’s golf team got off to a slow start Thursday at the Baton Rouge Regional as the Blue Devils turned in a 10-over-par, 298, and sits tied seventh overall with 36 holes remaining at the 6,285-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, Louisiana

Washington returned  a two-under-par late in the day to take the day one team lead with a 286, while South Carolina (290), Oregon (292), Florida (293), Houston (295), Arizona State (296), Duke (298), Brigham Young (298), LSU (299) and East Carolina (301) rounded out the top 10 teams.

“Today we had wind on a really good golf course,” said Duke head coach Dan Brooks.  “Regionals is a little bit different animal.  People tend to come out real hot at this tournament so we need to make sure we stay patient and keep believing in ourselves. If we do, we should be alright.”

Following the completion of 54 holes, the top six teams will advance to the NCAA Championship in Eugene, Oregon May 20-25. 

Duke junior Sandy Choi along with sophomore Leona Maguire set the pace for the Blue Devils in round one, each carding a one-over-par, 73, and they are tied 15^th overall. 

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, opened the day with Duke’s first birdie on the 496-yard, par five third hole to get to one-under.  She remained in red numbers until Maguire suffered a double-bogey on the next par five, No. 6.  Maguire got back to even par with a birdie on No. 11, but closed with bogeys on No. 14 and No. 17, along with a birdie on No. 16 to finish with a 73.  She rolled in a team-best 28 putts to go along with 10 fairways and 10 greens.

Nine players in total shot under par in the first round, led by Houston’s Leonie Harm and Washington’s Ying Luo with a three-under-par, 69.  

Curtis Cup team selection Meghan MacLaren (Florida International) from Wellingborough and Scot Rachael Taylor (North Carolina State) are tied 10th with level par 72s. 

Alongside Leona Maguire on the 73 mark is a third GB and I selection for the Curtis Cup, Charlotte Thomas (Washington) from Surrey.
