Another bright and sunny morning welcomed the 32 qualifiers to Kilkenny as the beginning of the match play got underway.
Niamh
McSherry (Lurgan) continued her good form as she carded a comprehensive
victory over her opponent Bethany Thornbury. Both Clodagh
and Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden) both progress through to the next stage
of the competition keeping the possibility of a family quarter final
alive. Kilkenny local, Jan Browne, battled it out with Rachel Thompson
(Cork) all the way to the 18th and
came away with a one-hole victory which sees her into the next round of the championship tomorrow morning.
On
the bottom half of the draw, Julie McCarthy made short work of opponent
Clodagh Coughlan (Douglas) with a 6 and 5 win. Maeve Rooney
(Co. Sligo) followed in similar fashion, finishing up after 12 with a
spectacular 7 and 6 victory over Sarah Lacey (Castleknock), as did Kate
Lanigan (Hermitage) with a 6 and 5 victory over Irish International
Valerie Clancy (Killareny).
Two matches needed to go down
the 19th, one of which was Kilkenny’s Katie Keenan who manage a one-hole victory over
Nicole McGavisk (Donabate).
The
16 first round winners will now compete in the Championship match play
and those
who were unsuccessful in the first round are through to the plate. All
