McSherry leads the way at Irish Girls' Close
IRISH LGU NEWS RELEASE
From Sarah Crowe
The
Irish Girls’ Close Championship got underway this morning at Kilkenny
golf club where competitors played 36 holes stroke play. The
championship course, measuring
5,711 yards, was in immaculate condition, meaning good scores were
there for the taking.
Irish
international Niamh McSherry (Lurgan) was the talk of the morning as
she led the field by six shots thanks to an opening round of 3 under
par, which included an
eagle at the 1st hole. She followed this with a solid
second round of 74 to finish on 2 under par for the day and maintain her
six shot advantage to win the Muwick Cup as leading qualifier ahead of
fellow international Julie McCarthy (Forrest Little),
with Killarney’s Mairead Martin a shot further behind.
As
the tournament enters the match play stages with 32 players qualifying
to contest the Championship over the next three days, hopes of a home
victory will rest with
Kilkenny’s Katie Keenen and Jan Browne who qualified in 7th and 28th place respectively. All information for the Irish Girls’ Close Championship, including the match play draw can be found
