IRISH LADIES GOLF UNION NEWS RELEASE
From Sarah Crowe
The
European Ladies Amateur Championship got underway yesterday in Sweden
where +5 handicapper Olivia Mehaffey (RCDL) took to the course early in
the day. She set the pace for the Irish
girls to follow as she posted a -2 score of 70.
Mehaffey had a shaky
start after opening with a bogey but quickly rectified that with a
birdie on the 6th. She approached the closing holes 1 over but carded 3 consecutive birdies to sign for an opening
round of 70. She is tied 16th ahead of the second day of play.
Belguim’s
Diane Baillieux leads the field after a flawless -8, 64. Her round
consisted of 8 birdies and 10 pars. The chasing pack isn’t far behind as
GB&I Curtis Cup player Bronte Law
finished on 65 and Norway’s Stina Resen is only 1 shot further back
after a 66.
Lisa Maguire (Slieve Russell) started her Championship off in style as she got her round underway on the 10th tee. She carded 3 birdies and 1 bogey on her front nine. Her back
9 proved more challenging as she bogeyed the 1st, 2nd and 7th to card a final score of 72. She is currently tied for 33rd place.
Jessica Ross (Clandeboye) is a further 2 shots back after a 74 and Chloe Ryan (Castletroy) finished with a 77.
They
will play three rounds of 18 holes each day, with a cut after 54 holes.
The top sixty plus ties will play the final round of 18 holes on
Saturday and the group of elite Irish international
golfers will all be looking for a top place finish.
