DURHAM, North Carolina - As she gets prepared to open Olympic action for Ireland this month, Duke University junior
Leona Maguire (pictured with her Mum and the Curtis Cup) has moved back into the No. 1 slot in the latest World Amateur Golf Ranking system.
Maguire
moved up two spots back into the position where she was for almost a
year. A product of Cavan, Ireland, Maguire owns 1584.3193 points and is
ahead of England's Bronte Law (1576.2674) and previous No. 1 Hannah O’Sullivan
(1564.4460).
Olivia Mehaffey from Ireland is No 5.
Over the summer, Maguire has helped Great Britain and Ireland to the Curtis Cup victory, tied 25th at the RICOH Women’s British Open, advanced to the quarter-finals of match play at the Ladies’ British Open Amateur Championship
and competed in the U.S. Women’s Open.
Fellow Duke golfers Virginia Elena Carta and Celine Boutier are currently 19th and 24th, respectively.
The
listing ranks the top female amateur golfers in the world on the basis
of their average performance in counting events over a rolling cycle of
the previous 52 weeks.
Maguire,
the 2014-15 National Player of the Year and two-time First Team
All-America with the Blue Devils, will open Olympic play Aug. 17 and
will feature 72 holes of stroke play. Golf Channel will be airing the
action each day.
