Aboyne Golf Club is celebrating after successfully hosting the Scottish Women's County Finals at the club last weekend. Selected by the sport's governing body 'ScottishGolf' to stage the high-profile national event, it was the first visit to Aboyne and resulted in a fiercely contested competition.
Visiting Royal Deeside were the County teams representing Midlothian, Dunbartonshire & Argyll and Dumfriesshire. Aberdeenshire also qualified for the finals with Aboyne represented by course record holder and Scotland international Shannon McWilliam who was undefeated in all her matches. Each County played each other over the three day competition in a round robin format. Foursomes were played in the morning and Singles matchplay in the afternoon. It came down to the last matches on Sunday afternoon to determine Dumfriesshire as winners.
Fiona Allison the winning Captain said "What an honour it was to be Captain of Dumfriesshire Ladies County Golf Association during the team's maiden victory at the Scottish County Finals. A huge credit must go to Aboyne Golf Club's hardworking green staff for presenting the course in immaculate condition. The hospitality of the club can only be described as outstanding. We were also blessed with a fabulous weekend of weather which was the icing on the cake for our historic success. Finally I must praise all the teams who competed in the event, which it has to be said, epitomised the spirit of golf and played every game in a wonderful manner."
Jim Burns, President of ScottishGolf, came up from the Central Belt to host the prizegiving ceremony and said "I want to add my own personal thanks for the kind welcome, great hospitality, and superb camaraderie shown by Aboyne Golf Club and its members. It was a great event and wonderful place, an absolute spectacle in fabulous order. On behalf of ScottishGolf many thanks to the Club and congratulations to everyone that was involved in making the weekend a fantastic success."
Sandra Findlay, Ladies Captain at Aboyne said "It was a great honour and privilege for Aboyne to be hosting such a prestigious tournament. The Club's Council and members who volunteered to help run the event put on a great tournament and we showed what a fine facility and great course we have at Aboyne. It truly was a great team effort across the Club. Given the glowing feedback we have received from players and officials it has definitely put Aboyne firmly on the map to hold future national golfing events."
