A bright and breezy day two greeted the competitors of the Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play at Arklow Golf Club. Overnight leaders Pat Doran (Donabate), Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) and Margaret McAuliffe (Ballybunion) began their second rounds mid-morning hoping to make their move up the leader board.
The players found scoring conditions tough as a cross breeze blew over the Eddie Hackett (originally Hawtree and Hackett) designed links. Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna) was first of the leaders to sign her card which totalled to a 6 over par 78; the best score of the day thus far. Behind her, round one co-leader Pat Doran (Donabate) had been 2 over through 9 holes but somewhat struggled on the back 9, signing for an 8 over par total which slipped her into second, 3 shots behind Corcoran.
With Corcoran and Doran out in front, third place is now shared by Sheena McElroy (Grange) and South African Sonja Bland, while Gertie McMullen (The Island) is one shot further back after her second round 77.
The top 40 and ties will now move forward to the final 18 holes tomorrow. With heavy rain forecast for tomorrow afternoon it will be survival of the fittest to see who will be crowned Irish Women’s Senior Open Championship 2016.
