Leona Maguire Wins European Ladies’ Amateur Golf Ranking’s Gold Medal

DURHAM, N.C.—Duke University junior Leona Maguire has been named the winner of the European Ladies’ Amateur Golf Ranking’s gold medal for the second consecutive year. It marks her fourth overall medal, after she was awarded the silver in 2010 and 2011.

In August, Maguire also won the Women’s Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) Mark H. McCormack Medal for the second straight year, after finishing the season ranked No. 1.

Maguire, a product of Cavan, Ireland, capped a stellar season in August with a tied for 21st placement at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. After making the first birdie of the tournament, Maguire registered rounds of 74, 65, 74 and 69 for a total of 282, which was tied for the low amateur. She played a big role earlier in the summer helping lead Great Britain & Ireland to an 11 ½ to 8 ½ victory over the United States in her home country of Ireland.

In the Ricoh Women’s British Open, Maguire won the Smyth Salver as the leading amateur, while also competing in the U.S. Women’s Open at CordeValle and advancing to the quarterfinals in the Ladies British Open Amateur Championship.

Maguire most recently helped Ireland to a historical bronze medal at the World Amateur Team Championships in Mexico. She combined with Olivia Mehaffey and Anabel Wilson to become the first Irish team to medal at the WATC. Maguire placed sixth overall, individually.

In the first event of the 2016-17 campaign for Duke, Maguire carded rounds of 74, 65 and 68 on her way to finishing tied third with a nine-under-par, 207, at the Annika Intercollegiate. The Blue Devil will next compete in the Windy City Classic Oct. 3-4 in Chicago, Ill.
