Press Release from ILGU
After an exciting finish to the European Senior Women’s Team Championships in Poland last week an international field has arrived to compete at the Irish Senior Women’s Open Stroke Play Championship at Arklow Golf Club. The Wicklow Links will see 60 competitors from as far afield as South Africa and Canada compete over 54 holes for the Irish Seniors Trophy.
Three of the victorious Irish Senior Women’s European Team are in attendance this week; Gertie McMullen (The Island), Susan Corcoran (Portumna) and Sheena McElroy (Grange), all of whom will be hoping for back to back victories. Local interest will be focused on three Arklow members and sisters Pauline Darcy, Nellie Ivory and Patricia Nolan.
Day one saw the completion of the first 18 holes which resulted in a three way tie at the top of the leader board. Suzanne Corcoran (Portumna), Pat Doran (Donabate) and Margaret McAuliffe (Ballybunnion) are locked on three over par after their opening rounds of 75. Close on their tails however are International veteran Sheena McElroy (Grange) and Alison Murdoch of Canada who both carded four over par 76’s. It was a difficult day for tournament favourites Minna Kaarnalahti (Finland) and 2015/2016 Irish Senior Women’s Close Champion Gertie McMullen (The Island) who both signed for 80’s, although with 36 holes left the tournament is far from over.
With over half of the field hailing from Ireland, they will be keen to impress the Irish Selectors ahead of the announcement of the National team to play the Senior Home International Matches at Alyth, Scotland.
