Burntisland Ladies hoping to reign in Spain

It has been a long, hard, road, but the Ladies of Burntisland Golf House Club are still going strong after 9 qualifying rounds of the Mail on Sunday National Golf Club Classic.

Following a bye in the first round, the Ladies saw off local rivals Kinghorn in round 2, and then whitewashed Scotscraig on their own patch. A tricky away tie at Monifieth followed that, but the Angus side proved no match for the Burntisland girls, and then Bathgate were swept away in round 5. Round 6 involved a trip to the quirky Muckhart course, and this was to be a crucial point in proceedings.
Following wins from Joyce Murdoch and Anne Main, along with half a point from Dorothy Peterson, the sides were locked at 2.5-2.5. It was then left to Joyce to pull on the spikes again and head out for the sudden-death shoot out ,where a solid par at the first extra hole was good enough to see them into the next round.
From then on, prestigious clubs Murcar, Old Course Ranfurly and Duddingston have all visited Dodhead, and all left empty-handed. So it is that a team, comprising of Myra Rae, Anne Main, Nicole Smith, Lynn Thom, Fiona Webster and Porscha Wilson, now head to El Rompido, Spain in November for the Semi-Finals (and hopefully Final) along with Bude & North Cornwall Golf Club, Chelmsford Golf Club and Leigh Golf Club (Warrington).
Club Captain, Gardner Brownlie, commented, "This is a wonderful achievement by the Ladies of the golf club and one they should be very proud of. It has been evident throughout their campaign that they have displayed a dogged determination and will to succeed. Representing themselves, the golf club and indeed the country, on behalf of everyone here at Burntisland we wish them well on the next stage of their journey".
Team Captain Myra Rae said she was honoured to be lead a great bunch of Ladies who had all played their part in getting to the final of a prestigious national competition, and she also paid tribute to the partners / husbands and families of all the team members for being so supportive. She said, "My thanks go to all the Ladies who played in the team throughout this journey which started way back on a cold Saturday in March. And now the journey continues to Spain and the dream carries on."
