EAST LOTHIAN LADIES GOLF CLUB RAISES OVER £7,800 FOR BREAST CANCER NOW
The club has dedicated its annual open greens day, held every August, to the charity for the last two years. All of the money raised from this event has been donated towards Breast Cancer Now’s life-saving research.
The decision to support the charity was made by Nicky Black as part of her two year captaincy of the club.
Nicky Black said: “The event was a great success and we’re so pleased to have raised £7,849 for this very worthy cause. Every ten minutes, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer and sadly every 45 minutes a woman dies from the disease. We’re supporting Breast Cancer Now Breast Cancer Now because we believe that if we all act now, by 2050, we can stop women dying from breast cancer.
“Two members of my close family have had breast cancer, and as a women’s golf club we’ve had many members either suffering from the disease, or whose loved ones have been affected. It was a popular and worthwhile choice for our club.”
Niamh Crawford, Community Engagement Officer at Breast Cancer Now, said: “We’re so thrilled that the Gullane Ladies Golf Club events were a success. Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK, one in eight women will face it in their lifetime - around 1,000 women will die from breast cancer this month in the UK alone. We’re determined to put a stop to this, but we’ll only reach that point by acting now – which is why we need the tremendous support of people like Nicky Black.”
Right now, more women than ever are getting the disease – around 4,600 women are diagnosed with breast cancer each year in Scotland, and sadly around 1,000 women still die from the disease.
Breast Cancer Now is bringing together all those affected by the disease to improve the way breast cancer is prevented, detected and treated in order to stop the disease and move from a time when people fear breast cancer to a generation where everybody lives.
