AMY YANG WINS HONDA LPGA THAILAND WITH RECORD TOTAL
LPGA TOUR NEWS RELEASE
South Korean Amy Yang won the Honda LPGA Thailand tournament by five strokes with a record low 72-hole aggregate of 22-under-par 266 at Chonburi today (Sunday).
Compatriots So Yeon Ryu (271) and Sei Young Kim (273) made it a South Korean 1-2-3.
It was Amy's second victory in the event over the past three seasons and her third victory on the LPGA Tour.
With a birdie on the final hole, Yang carded a final-round 68 to win the first prize of $240,000. She beat the previous record mark, set by Suzann Pettersen in 2007 and equalled by Ai Miyazato in 2010, by one stroke.
Heavy rainstorms during the second round forced a marathon golf scenario for many players to battle through along with the warm temperatures and humid playing conditions. Amy Yang was forced to play 31 holes on Saturday and finish her five remaining round three holes early Sunday morning.
None of that fazed Yang as she carded 10 birdies, one eagle and only one bogey over her second and partial third rounds on Saturday to take a four-shot overnight lead.
She returned early Sunday morning and birdied the 17th to gain one more shot on the field as she closed out her third round.
"You know, very happy, beyond happy. Wasn't easy with rain delays and 4:00 a.m. wake-up calls two days in a row." Yang described following her victory.
"But, you know, I stayed really patient out there, did my best, and very happy to win the tournament."
Yang has been remarkable in Thailand over the last three seasons and has yet to card an over-par round. Her 1-under, 71 during the third round in 2015 is her highest score.
"It's always nice to be back here playing." Yang responded when asked about her success in Thailand. "I love this place. I love people here. And with my parents, spending time with them here, it's just great every time."
Lexi Thompson, who tied for fourth place on 275, was the highest placed American in the field of 70. She earned $68,904.
World No 1 Lydia Ko finished joint eighth on 11-under 277 with Yorkshire's Jodi Ewart Shadoff (69-69-68-71). Both players earned $33,922.
Another English player, Charley Hull, finished joint 23rd on 282 with scores of 69, 73, 69 and 71. She earned $16,552.
Catriona Matthew from North Berwick finished T45 on level par 288, which meant she was 12 over par with a first-round 84 and 12 under par for her last three rounds of 66, 67 and 71. The Scot earned $6,360.
