Blue Devils, Leona Maguire Jump Out to Leads at LSU Tiger Golf Classic

March 24, 2017
DURHAM, N.C. – The Duke women's golf team featured an excellent day Friday jumping out to the team and individual leads at the LSU Tiger Golf Classic as the field played 36 holes at the 6,247-yard, par 72 University Club in Baton Rouge, La.

Duke collected rounds of 285 and 286 for a five-under-par, 571, and leads by 13 strokes over Oklahoma State (584). Rounding out the top 10 teams are Arkansas (584), NC State (588), SMU (595), Denver (595), Washington (599), Clemson (602), UNC Wilmington (602) and Kansas (604).

Blue Devil junior Leona Maguire carded a five-under-par, 67, in round one to take the individual lead and then fired a four-under-par, 68, in round two and holds a five-stroke lead with a nine-under-par, 135. Teammate Virginia Elena Carta and Washington's Julianne Alvarez are tied second with a four-under, 140.

Maguire, who hails from Cavan, Ireland, registered nine birdies and 24 pars in her opening 36 holes and turned in the tied for second-lowest 36-hole ledger in school history on a par 72 course (135).

After opening the tournament with a bogey, Maguire went on to go 25 straight bogey-free holes, which included eight birdies and an eagle. Maguire registered birdies on No. 3, No. 4 and No. 8 to get to two-under-par. She added birdies on the 10th, 15th and 17th to finish the first round at five-under, 65. Maguire hit 11 fairways, 16 greens and lined up 28 putts.

The second round was much like the first for Maguire as she notched a birdie on No. 3 and then holed a 15-yard greenside bunker shot on the 478-yard, par five sixth for her third eagle of the season. She added another birdie on No. 8 to get to four-under. Her lone bogey of the second round came on the ninth hole, before closing the back nine with eight pars and a birdie on the 448-yard, par five 14th. Maguire hit 16 greens, 13 fairways and had 30 putts in round two.

If Maguire can hold on Sunday for the win, it would give her six collegiate victories in three years with the Blue Devils. The six wins would equal Brittany Lang and Lindy Duncan on Duke's all-time charts.

Junior Lisa Maguire, who is playing as an individual, posted rounds of 81 and 77 and is tied for 65th. She notched two birdies in both rounds.

Due to incoming inclement weather, no golf will be played Saturday and the final round will kick off Sunday, March 26 with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Follow the action with live scoring via www.GolfStat.com
