Irish Colleges Matchplay Sprint at Woodbrook
Irish Colleges Matchplay Sprint
Trinity reign at 9 hole Sprint
3rd March 2017
On a day where studying rather than golf would have been more favourable the Irish Students battled hard in the rain at the Irish Colleges Matchplay Sprint at Woodbrook. Eight teams had progressed to the knockout stages after yesterday's round robin group format. Extra holes were needed for 2 of the 4 quarter finals where University of Ulster (UU) (b) and Maynooth University (MU) (a) - who overcame their teammates - moved forward to the semi-final stages along with IADT Dun Laoghaire (a) and Trinty College Dublin (TCD). In perhaps the upset of the competition, TCD rallied to beat MU (a) in the semi-finals while IADT bowed out to UU (a) to set up a UU vs. TCD final over the closing 9 holes.
Due to inclement weather the third place playoff match was conceded and IADT was awarded their first Bronze Medal. In an exciting finish to the inaugural 9 hole sprint matchplay event, TCD overcame UU (a) by 4 holes to be crowned 2017 Irish Colleges Matchplay Sprint Champions.
"It's such a surprise, I am not sure how we got here but we are delighted all the same! The format has worked really well, it levels things out and makes the game so much quicker which is great," commented TCD Captain Nick Armstrong after the final. "It has been one of the most enjoyable formats we have played in Intervarsity Golf thus far."
The students now move on to the series of events to be played over the coming months, the first of which being the Munster Students Amateur Open in Cork from March 20 - 22.
