Duke WGOLF: Leona Maguire Selected CoSIDA Academic All-District III
DURHAM, N.C. – Duke University junior Leona Maguire has been named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District III Women's At-Large Team, which was announced this week by the organization.
One of 11 female student-athletes selected to the NCAA Division I All-District III team, Maguire was joined by fellow Blue Devil Robin Blazing of the field hockey squad. Maguire and Blazing will now move on to the national ballot for CoSIDA Academic All-America.
Maguire, a native of Cavan, Ireland, was recently named the 2017 ACC Player of the Year and is coming off a tied for sixth place finish at the NCAA Regional Championship in Albuquerque, N.M. In April, Maguire claimed her second ACC Championship with a six-under-par, 210, while also helping lead Duke to its 20th team championship.
A two-time All-America and 2015 National Player of the Year, Maguire is currently having one of the best seasons in Duke and NCAA history collecting a 70.0 stroke average to go along with three victories and nine top 10 finishes. Her 70.0 stroke average is currently one of the lowest in NCAA history and would be a new ACC record if the season ended today. Maguire is currently the No. 1 ranked golfer in Golfweek Individual rankings and in the World Amateur rankings.
Maguire is a psychology major and has been named a Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) All-American Scholar each of her first two years. She is a two-time All-ACC Academic Team and ACC Honor Roll selection.
The Academic All-District teams recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom and are divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada.
Maguire helped the Blue Devils to a second place finish at the NCAA Regionals and advanced to the NCAA Championship, which will take place May 19-24 at Rich Harvest Farm in Sugar Grove, Ill.
