MEHAFFEY IN FORM AS ARIZONA STATE ROUT FLORIDA
Olivia Mehaffey in form as Arizona State rout Florida
SUGAR GROVE, Illinois – Arizona State had never played in match play at the NCAA Women’s Championship before Tuesday. However, the Sun Devils have plenty of match-play experience with four international team players in their line-up.
That match-play maturity showed during a 5-0 rout of Florida in the quarter-finals at Rich Harvest Farms.
GB and I cap Olivia Mehaffey and Italy’s Roberta Liti each notched 5-and-4 victories for Arizona State, the top-ranked team in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and the third seed at this championship.
Mehaffey, a freshman from Northern Ireland, defeated Florida’s Sam Wagner in the lead-off match after going five up through six holes. Liti was four up at the turn after a three-putt par at the par-5 18th (her ninth hole) before rattling off birdies at Nos. 1-3 to take a commanding six-hole lead.
Former Scottish U18 girls champion Fiona Liddell, a student at Baylor University, Texas, lost by 3 and 2 to C Danielsson as Baylor lost 3-2 to Stanford.
Liddell was only one down after 14 holes but lost the 15th and 16th for the match.
QUARTER-FINAL RESULTS
Stanford bt Baylor 3-2
Arizona State bt Florida 5-0
Northwestern bt Kent State 3-2
Ohio State bt Southern California 3.5-1.5
