Grant v Maguire in Quarter-finals
By COLIN FARQUHARSON
The last two surviving home players, top seed Paula Grant from Lisburn in Northern Ireland, and world No 1 female amateur Leona Maguire from over the Border in Ireland, will meet in this afternoon's lead-off quarter-final at Pyle and Kenfig.
Maguire made short work of Beatrie Wallin (Sweden), 56th of the 64 match-play qualifiers.
Leona, from the Slieve Russell Club, Ireland, won by 7 and 6 after surging six up at the turn.
Paul Grant (Lisburn) had a tougher test against another Northern Ireland stalwart, Olivia Mehaffey (Royal Co Down Ladies), like Maguire a member of the GB and I team for the Vagliano Trophy match in Italy at the end of the monthy.
Grant was three up after nine and 12 holes but Mehaffey cut her deficit to two after 15 and only one over the closing holes but Paula, who is not in the Vagliano Trophy team, held on for a notable victory.
Grant was a beaten quarter-finalist in the 2015 "British." Maguire has never won this championship but she did win the British women's open amateur stroke-play title at Royal Ashdown Forest GC in 2011.
