Mairead Martin leading qualifier at the Irish Women’s Close Championship with 148 total

Mairead Martin (Kanturk), pictured above, leads the qualifiers, winning the Leitrim Cup at the Irish Women’s Close Championship in Mullingar with a score of 148 (75-73).

 

After the first round of qualifying, Maynooth University Scholar Shannon Burke (Ballinrobe) and Ladies British Open Amateur Championship Quarter Finalist Paula Grant (Lisburn) led the way, having shot level par, 74. Burke carded two birdies at the par 4 6th and the par 5 14th which were counteracted with two bogeys at the 2nd and 4th while Grant managed birdies at the 7th, 9th and 16th for her 74. 

 

A swirling breeze at Mullingar stiffened in the afternoon, and while Burke and Grant slipped to two and one over respectively, Martin was not affected and her second round 73 included 4 birdies at the 1^st, 2^nd, 8^th and 14^th.
 “It was very tough in the blustery conditions. The wind kept changing direction all day. I putted very well this afternoon which was the key and kept my score going,” said Mairead,
“I played well last week at the British Amateur in Wales and I got to play with some great players which was nice and gave me some confidence coming into this week.”

 

The score of the day was shot by girls’ International Lauren Walsh (Castlewarden) who managed 6 birdies on her way to a 2 under 72. She qualifies in 7^th position and meets Cork’s Rachel Thompson tomorrow in the final 32.

 

Martin has been drawn against Munster Women’s Champion Paula Walsh (Doneraile) for tomorrow mornings matches which will begin at 9am.
