Katie Miller, President of the University of St Andrews Ladies Golf Club, writes....
Now in it’s 7th year, the University Ladies Golf Club were excited to host the 2017 iteration of the St Andrews Schoolgirls Championship last weekend, with a fantastic field of 32 golfers playing for the prestigious Renee Powell Cup and Carol Kaufmann Shield. With players aged 10-18 coming all the way from Orkney to Kent, we had girls from all over the UK playing this weekend on the New, Strathtyrum and Jubilee courses. The competition was split into two separate fields with players with handicaps 0-12.4 playing in the strokeplay competition for the Renee Powell Cup and handicaps 12-24 playing in the stableford competition for the Carol Kaufmann Shield.
We are very grateful to Professor Sally Mapstone, Principal and Vice Chancellor of the University of St Andrews, who kindly joined us to present the prizes to our winners.
Thanks must also go to both The Links Trust and the R&A who continue to support our event each year, hosting the tournament and providing funding to enable us to grow year on year.
We are also delighted that Carol Kaufmann was able to join us for lunch on the last day, to meet the committee and wish some of the competitors good luck before their final round. We look forward to working with Carol and Renee Powell in the coming years to develop the tournament, and provide more opportunites for schoolgirls to play competitive golf.
Both the players and their parents expressed their enjoyment over the weekend and we look forward to welcoming them all back next year for the Schoolgirls Championship 2018.
