LEONA MAGUIRE SCORES HER NINTH US COLLEGE TOURNAMENT VICTORY
CHAPEL HILL, North Carolina – Against a stellar field, the Duke women’s golf team swept both the team and individual Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational titles Sunday in record fashion. The Blue Devils shot the second-lowest 54-hole ledger in school history with a 31-under-par, 833, while senior Leona Maguire turned in a tournament-record 12-under-par, 204, at the 6,379-yard, par 72 Finley Golf Course in Chapel Hill, North Carolina
Duke was in a battle for the team title with second-ranked Alabama the entire day. Even though the Blue Devils held a 10-stroke lead heading into the final round, the Crimson Tide went low Sunday with an 18-under-par, 270. After leading most of the day, Duke suffered five bogeys over a stretch of holes 14-16, and Alabama took a two stroke advantage.
The Blue Devils pulled it together and connected on six birdies over their final four holes to claim the title. Trailing by one stroke late, junior Virginia Elena Carta tapped in for birdie on No. 17 and freshman Miranda Wang turned in birdies on three out of her final four holes to help push the Blue Devils to the victory.
